It's been a while since my last in the City On a Dime series addition... we are due for one! City On a Dime to me means spending little-to-no amount of money on something, but getting a full experience despite the price tag. It may not always be free in these posts, but I judge the criteria on how great I think the activity is for what you're paying for it. Here is City On a Dime: Salt Lake City, Utah.
I travel a lot for my job and the amount that we travel can get kind of expensive if I go out to eat on every layover or plan an activity. Yelp and Timeout have been my best friends so far in finding affordable/free things to do in every city I end up in.
Recently, I've been getting Salt Lake City layovers around once or twice a month ranging from 20 hours to sometimes 30. We stay in a great area downtown and I love being in close proximity to everything! It's a great place to get out and explore.
SLC Green Bikes
The Green Bikes is a bike share system with docking stations set up around the city. It's $7 for your first hour and $5 every hour after that. You can also dock your bike again at a different station for more time added. It's a great efficient and cheap way to see the city!
Temple Square Gardens
This area houses a gorgeous garden in the vicinity of the big LDS temple in Salt Lake. You can't enter the temple, but you can take a great walk in the beautifully kept temple grounds!
This paradise of birds is an 8 acre sanctuary and aviary that often holds really cool and unique events such as Breakfast with the Birds! To save money, go after 5 p.m. in the summer time and it's only $5 for admission!
Fifth Water Hot Springs
This is a bit outside of SLC but I HAD to include it because it looks so cool! This is a beautiful 2.5 mile hike to a picturesque hot springs and waterfall! The best part? It's free!
