Open Letter to My Future Spouse (wherever in this world you may be or if I will have one):
For one day I may have roots long enough to tie me down, but a partnership with me will never be confined.
You will need to love my indecisiveness, and my need to drop everything and go. You will have to embrace my penchant for exploring new places without maps but with a reckless abandon.
Please love our relationship, which will sometimes be lived out of a suitcase, because my bond with travel came first. More importantly, please love when we get lost together. Wanderlust has always loved me--even before you. Don't confuse my wandering soul for selfishness. I've seen the world and it's all I want to give you.
If we are lucky, our relationship will be filled with our mutual love for seeing the world and seeing each other inside of it. You will love my messy hair from the passenger's seat, and I will love how the sunlight burns red on your face through the window on the plane.
I will love you with the passion of someone who is always hungry. I will love you with the knowledge of someone who has seen the world. I will love you with the determination of someone who has made their own way across obstacles.
With the knowledge that sometimes our travel and our lives may split us apart, you know that we will always reunite. My independence is something to be valued, I am not looking for my other half; I am already whole.
Instead I'm looking for someone to complement me. I need someone who will make me feel like the best version of myself. I'm looking for a collaborative partnership--a teammate.
I'm not seeking only a lover. You need to be my best friend, my cheerleader and my partner in crime. Passion alone is not enough for love to survive. The love I need should fuel endless discussions, arguments and laughter.
My suitcase heart is not an easy thing to have - it will always be ready to travel, but will welcome you warmly. We won't need a place to call home, we've found it within each other.
