Labor Day in the United States is a day to celebrate the accomplishments of hard working Americans and how these contribute to the overall well-being of our country. Often considered the mark of the end of our summer, Labor Day is a day when workers relax and take the day off!
Not many people celebrate Labor Day in lavish ways, they are most likely enjoying the final day of summer with family and friends in small get-togethers. Labor Day Weekend (the most common 3-day weekend of the year other than Memorial Day Weekend) is also a large day of sales at local malls. If you're stumped on what to do this year, I've put together a list of 7 unique and fun things to do on Labor Day!
Grab a group of your favorite friends and/or family and throw a picnic party! Here's a few best picnic recipes I am LOVING this summer:
Blackberry Champagne Punch via Sugar & Cloth
Kale and Roasted Sweet Potato Salad via Celebrating Sweets
No Bake Fresh Peach Icebox Cake via The Unlikely Baker
Ever since my parents got our very first black lab puppy, Tess, we've used Labor Day Weekend to celebrate her birthday! We got Tess from a private owner who knew her birthdate, but once Tess passed away and my folks got their new rescue pup, Mocha, we've continued the tradition to hold a puppy birthday party with her friends (and their owners) every Labor Day.
Grab a variety of dog treats from your local pet store and create your own "treat bags", get some snacks for your human friends (plus booze - you can't go without booze!) and a whole bunch of dog toys to keep the pups occupied. Lay out all of your party supplies, but be sure you keep the human food out of puppy reach! My folks do this by using a super high, 6 foot tall table.
What if you could pretend to be anyone for the day!? Hosting a costume party over Labor Day Weekend will hands-down declare you the most popular of all your friends ;) Perhaps you decide to theme the costume party with iconic jobs and occupations throughout history, or if your party is female-exclusive, use this time to celebrate badass working women (#TOTALGIRLBOSS)!
Perhaps you are a Black Friday lover (Black Friday is a shopping holiday celebrated by Americans the day after Thanksgiving - the sales are ridiculous and the malls are PACKED), but you'd much rather beat the Black Friday chaos. Host your own shopping spree party with a few of your favorite girlfriends.
Pick a mall (perhaps you'll decide to travel somewhere to a mall not many people from your group have visited) and make sure to allot a set budget for the day. Then, do your research. There's plenty of newspaper ads detailing all the sales for the weekend, but you can also find more information by Googling your favorite stores or checking their mobile apps (if applicable).
Take this day to appreciate our ancestors--the hard working Americans from all over the world that came to America for a better life, or those who are born in America. You can do this a variety of ways: creating your own trivia/board games, visiting a local museum and quizzing each other after, etc.
Get ready to let loose! Create your own bar and cocktail menu for you and your gals. Need some cocktail inspiration? Here's five recipes I highly recommend:
Grapefruit, Ginger and Lemongrass Sake via The Bojon Gourmet
Grapefruit and Sage Champagne via Floating Kitchen
Fresh Heirloom Bloody Marys with Old Bay + Spicy Pickles via With Food + Love
Fresh Honeydew Margaritas via Cookie + Kate
Tequila Lime Spritzer via The Glitter Guide
BINGE MARATHON PARTY
Perhaps you'd just prefer to stay inside (maybe it's a super hot day and you'd rather cool off than burn up). In this case, stage your own binge-watching TV marathon party. Pick one of your favorites (F.R.I.E.N.D.S., anyone?) and have all of your guests dress like their favorite character. You might want some snacks, too - you need yummy munchies!
Are you doing one of these for Labor Day, or something else? Share your plans in the comments!
