Our sweet Anthony. Kate. Avicii. So many we know and love in our own families and circles. We lose another soul to suicide every 40 seconds (or 3,000 lives per day) worldwide, and for each individual who takes his or her own life, at least 20 more attempt to. Not to mention, suicide rates are up 25% nationally. What oh what can we do to change this trend?
Four years ago, I wrote this piece (*TW) shortly after Robin Williams committed suicide, and a day later, a colleague of mine took his life. It seemed that the spring and summer had a twisted influence on the amount of suicides that occurred that year, but it unfortunately happens every year. Spring and summer have the highest seasonal rate of suicide and there's a few ideas behind this trend.
We had a guest blogger write about how to manage suicidal thoughts and behavior a little while ago, offering helpful hacks for the loved ones of those struggling. This post is a must-read today.
It's equally important to understand why celebrity suicides can push everyday people who were already on the edge.
Most importantly, it's key to be present in our feelings and the feelings and experiences of those around us.
There is a solution to this pain and people are waiting to help you or your friend/family through this tough time. If you are experiencing suicidal thoughts or know someone that is, please call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255. If you are outside of the United States, here is a comprehensive list of help lines.
And I will state it again as I did : if you are feeling compelled to make a donation to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, please click here.
This one goes out to the grievers. Together we will come out of the darkness.
